What Causes TMJD?
Clenching & Grinding
Often a physical response to stress, clenching puts immense pressure on the temporomandibular joint and surrounding muscles.
Chronic Stress
Emotional tension frequently manifests as muscle tightness in the jaw, leading to persistent discomfort.
Neck & Shoulder Tension
Tension in the upper body often travels upward, affecting jaw alignment and muscle function.
Posture Habits
Forward head posture can strain the jaw muscles and alter the way your teeth meet.
TMJD Conditions
Direct issues with the temporomandibular joint itself, including disc displacement or arthritis.
Joint Irritation
Inflammation within the joint capsule can cause sharp pain or a constant dull ache.
Previous Injury
Past trauma to the jaw, head, or neck can lead to long-term alignment and pain issues.
Chewing Habits
Consistently chewing on one side or frequently using gum can overwork specific jaw muscles.
TIPS
When to Seek Assessment
Jaw discomfort may sometimes feel sharp, achy, or irritated around the joint area. Assessment helps determine whether massage therapy is appropriate or whether referral may be recommended. A Registered Massage Therapist can assess soft tissue, joint movement, and muscle tension, and may recommend referral when symptoms appear outside massage therapy scope.
TMJD-Focused Care
Specialized massage therapy with a focus on TMJD by targeting the muscles of mastication, which can help with inflammation in the temporomandibular joint, and tension in the neck and shoulders. Taylor Fleming RMT uses a combination of clinical assessment and gentle soft-tissue techniques to restore mobility and provide lasting comfort.
